As you spend time praying this week it is important to take note of what the Word of God teaches us concerning prayer. The Bible helps us to realize what matters when we pray. Did you know that the motives of your heart are important to your prayer life. Look at this passage in James.
When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
Did you catch that? When we are praying and asking God with selfish motives we do not receive the answers to our prayers because motivation is wrong. Our requests are selfish or self serving.
Proverbs takes this idea even further:
All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord.
As you spend time seeking the Lord today ask Him to search your heart and motives and ask Him to show you where you may be asking for things in a selfish way. A key to powerful prayer is praying the will of God over a situation instead of our own selfish desires.
