I want to congratulate you for taking a step of faith and joining in on our all-church week of fasting. As you progress through the week it is important to remember that fasting has more to do with your heart than your stomach. It is a powerful way to defeat your flesh while your spirit man grows stronger.
There is an interesting passage in the book of Jeremiah that I want you to see. At this time in history the Children of Israel were living in rebellion to God and their hearts were hard towards Him but they were still fasting. Think about that. They were taking the time and effort to fast but their hearts were not in right relationship with God. Look at what God said to the prophet:
10 This is what the Lord says about this people: “They greatly love to wander; they do not restrain their feet. So the Lord does not accept them; he will now remember their wickedness and punish them for their sins.” 11 Then the Lord said to me, “Do not pray for the well-being of this people. 12 Although they fast, I will not listen to their cry; though they offer burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Instead, I will destroy them with the sword, famine and plague.”
God said, even though they are fasting He was not going to listen to their prayers. This is why I stated earlier that fasting is more about your heart than your stomach. Here on the very first day of our fast I encourage you to spend time making sure your heart is right before God. Repent of any sin that you may be aware of and make a fresh dedication of your life to the Lord. A right heart before God will make all the difference.
